Region Portfolio: British Waterways Consultation in Stoke
British Waterways is the largest navigation authority in the UK, responsible for over 2000 miles of canals and rivers. Over a three year period, British Waterways has invested £5.44 million in creating a high quality canalside environment in Stoke-on-Trent. To further extend their work, British Waterways were seeking lottery funding to support the employment of a Project Officer to work with the community on projects along the canals.
To support this bid ECOTEC Survey undertook a brief period of public consultation to evaluate public perception of recent improvements, gathering evidence on the types of activity the community would like to be involved in and to gauge support from the community for the employment of a Project Officer.
We conducted interviews across 5 days with users and non-users of the local waterways, posing questions on current opinion of the canals and asking for suggestions as to how things could improve.
Support for a Project Officer was overwhelming amongst both users and non-users, suggesting that the role would result in increased use of the canals by the local community.
